Resurgence of Board Games due to Digital Detox

Homebound consumers are trading pixels for cardboard and plastic. For those seeking “digital detox”, board games are becoming a popular choice. In 2020, the global games and puzzles market grew 10% to reach US$11 billion, and is expected to rise further to over US$12 billion in 2021.

Although such figures pale in comparison to the US$90 billion video games market, the gaming industry has seen instances of video games such as Stardew Valley and fantasy adventure The Witcher trending in reverse. In face of the juggernaut of the video-gaming industry, it appears that board games are here to stay.

How can gaming companies cater to the different segments of gamers?
