40 million new entrants to SEA Internet Economy in 2020

Covid-19 is a game changer for e-Commerce in Southeast Asia (SEA). In 2020 alone, the region saw over 40 million new users joining the Internet Economy for the first time. This puts total internet users in SEA at 400 million, with the gross market value of SEA’s Internet Economy on track to hit US$350 billion by 2025.

With mandated physical store closures, retailers have gone online. E-commerce in SEA increased by a whopping 63% over the past year, with over a third of 2020’s online commerce generated by new shoppers. This e-commercialisation of SEA’s retail sector is expected to stay, with 80% of shoppers who shifted online in the past year intending to continue buying online, even as Covid restrictions ease in SEA countries.

How can digital infrastructure and logistical services keep up with the swelling demand for e-Commerce in SEA?
