Marine fish capture hit a record 96.4 million metric tonnes in 2018. This is more than half of total global fish production (179 million tonnes) for the year.
Rapid increase in fishing from marine waters has resulted in biologically sustainable fish stock level falling to an all-time low, from 90% in 1990 to 65.8% today. This overfishing is depleting the fish stock at a rate that the species cannot replenish.
As the world’s appetite for fish shows no signs of slowing, falling fish supplies threatens food security and livelihoods. A study shows that at this rate, the world’s oceans will be emptied of fish for human consumption by 2048.
